Welwyn Garden City cyclist killed in collision on the A10 (8/6/11)

A fatal collision, which claimed the life of a Welwyn Garden City man, on the A10 late last night (Wednesday), has sparked a police appeal for witnesses.

The crash is believed to have happened at about 11.40pm on the southbound carriageway on the Ware viaduct.

A pedal cyclist is alleged to have collided with a black Mini Cooper.

The pedal cyclist, a 37-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The southbound carriageway of the A10 between Hanbury Manor and the A602 Stevenage junction was closed while emergency services dealt with the aftermath.

PC Kevin Sloan, from the Road Crash Investigation Unit, said: “I am appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and can help explain what happened to come forward.

“Those with information can contact me via the non-emergency number 0845 33 00 222.”

Ambulance crews from Hertford, Ware and Welwyn Garden City rushed to the scene of the collision and battled in vain to save the cyclist’s life.

Ambulance service spokesman Gary Sanderson said: “First and foremost our thoughts are firmly with the mans family at this tragic time.”

He added: “On arrival a pedal cyclist was found in a serious condition and after everyone’s best efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.”

• A 24-year-old woman from Broxbourne has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop. She is currently still in custody.
