Two horse riders hit by van in Essex - one killed one seriously injured (16/1/11)

A woman died and a man was injured when a van hit the two horses they were riding in Essex.

The accident happened in Pilgrims Hatch near Brentwood on Sunday morning.

The man was treated by ambulance crews before being taken to Queens Hospital, Romford. One horse died in the crash and the other had to be put to sleep.

A 51-year-old man was arrested for causing death by careless driving. Road closures were in place as officers investigated the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash can contact police.
