Jane Kilmartin seriously injured during National 25 time trial (9/6/12)
Jane Kilmartin was taking place in the National 25 mile time trial on the A19 in Teesside when she was in a collision with a car.
She was hospitalised with 5 broken vertebrae. There is no report on whether or not the driver was arrested.
Several participants in the event had withdrawn feeling that the course was unsafe. The Highways Agency did not permit the organising club from erecting warning signs, and traffic on the road – a dual carriageway – was very heavy.
A cyclist was killed on the A19 in January 2012.
CTC has found that the risk of death for cyclists on rural A-roads is 28 times higher than on minor urban roads. Some of those deaths have involved time trials.
